Organise Your Home After a Funeral

Declutter and Organise Your Home After a Funeral

September 21, 2018

Decluttering and organising your home after a funeral or cremation can take weeks, or even months depending on your grieving process. At some point in time, many people will begin to feel it beneficial to begin removing objects of the deceased from their home. This can be an emotional process and should be done with care and thoughtfulness towards the departed.

If you are in the position where you need to organise items in your home after a funeral, here’s a few tips to help you through:

Wait Until You are Personally Ready

Some people can feel pressured to sort through their loved one’s belongings shortly after the funeral, but it’s important to wait until you are emotionally ready to undertake the task. While some might prefer to begin the process early, others may choose to hold onto memories for a while longer until everything has settled down.

Consider Family and Friends

The emotional burden that comes with sorting through a late loved one’s personal items can be shared with others if needed. Calling on family and friends to help you may make the task easier, easing the emotional load from your shoulders. When you are sorting through items, consider carefully if there are any memories attached to each of them. Family and friends may value having these sentimental items in their homes as a keepsake.

Think of Your Late Loved One’s Wishes

Even though this may be difficult, your departed loved one may prefer having many of their items donated, sold or given to others. This may not be ideal for you, but it’s important you respect their wishes and follow through with any instructions they have given to you prior to their death.

Give Yourself the Time to Feel Loss

Removing the objects of a deceased family member can feel like losing them all over again. If at any time you are feeling overwhelmed with the process, give yourself the time to grieve. Don’t feel like you need to do it all in a short space of time if it is not helpful to your personal grieving process.
