How is a Body Prepared for Cremation?
Before a body is cremated, it undergoes a preparation stage where the body is washed and dressed according to the family’s wishes.
The family decides what the deceased will wear during the cremation process. They can even include jewelry that will be cremated with the body. However, things with batteries including pacemakers, watches, or the like are not permitted as they may explode due to the heat.
How Does a Cremation Funeral Work?
The body is then placed inside a casket or coffin that the family has chosen for their loved one.
The cremation chamber is heated up to a temperature of 980 deg C before the casket or coffin is passed through. The cremation takes around 1.5 to 3 hours to complete.
Bone fragments that remain after the cremation will go through a grinder that will turn them into grey, fine powder (ash). What is left is then placed inside an urn and given to the family to be taken home.

Cremation saves ground space, but being buried gives the deceased a place to be remembered and kept forever. The choice is up to you.

Contrary to what others may say, caskets or coffins are not re-used by funeral directors when a cremation service is to be performed.
Instead, they are burned together with the body. As long as they do not contain metal parts, any type of casket or coffin can be used, even cardboard ones. This, however, does not include rented coffins used for funeral services.
Rented coffins are replaced by alternative containers that get cremated with the body.

One alternative is to be buried with an eco-funeral. This is a much cheaper alternative, as it doesn’t require the deceased’s body to be embalmed or placed in a casket when buried. In addition to cheaper costs, it is better for the environment.

Once the body enters the cremation chamber (also known as a retort), the combustible casket will start to burn, and then so will the body.
Bodily fluids rapidly evaporate due to the extreme heat, followed by the combustion of the skin, muscles, and soft tissues. After about 90 minutes, only bone fragments remain. These are then ground until they turn into fine powdered ash. This is what is placed inside the urn.
